Crystal Arensdorf
Case Information:
Crystal Ann Arensdorf was 20 years old when she vanished from Dubuque, Iowa in the early morning hours of July 4, 2001, after spending the evening celebrating Independence Day.
Crystal had spent the previous evening watching the annual Fourth of July fireworks display along the Mississippi River with her older sister Jennifer. After watching the spectacular show, Crystal and her sister parted ways around 2:00 AM.
Crystal then joined friends at Knicker’s Saloon, a popular bar and grill located at 2186 Central Avenue in downtown Dubuque. She had been described by her loved ones as a shy person who was finally beginning to come out of her shell and mature into a wonderful young woman.
Case Details:
Crystal arrived at Knicker’s Saloon with several friends in the early morning hours. As the night progressed, her friends gradually left the establishment one by one.
Crystal remained behind, planning to share a taxi cab with the bartender, Robert F. Mootz, to East Dubuque, Illinois—a community just across the river where bars stayed open later. When Mootz finished cleaning up the bar and the cab arrived to pick them up, Crystal was nowhere to be found. She had vanished without a trace, leaving behind her car, her keys, and her money.
Timeline of Events:
July 3, 2001 – Evening: Crystal finished her work shift and had a phone argument with her boyfriend, Tim Gerlieb. Despite the disagreement, she decided to join her sister Jennifer to watch the Fourth of July fireworks display along the Mississippi River in Dubuque.
July 4, 2001 – Approximately 2:00 AM: After the fireworks, Crystal and her sister parted ways. Crystal went to Knicker’s Saloon at 2186 Central Avenue with several friends to continue celebrating. This was the last confirmed sighting of Crystal alive.
July 4, 2001 – Later that morning: Crystal’s boyfriend called her sister Jennifer asking where Crystal was. The family realized Crystal had not come home and had not contacted anyone—behavior completely out of character for her. Her loved ones emphasized that Crystal always let people know where she was.
July 5, 2001: Crystal’s family reported her missing to the Dubuque Police Department. Crystal failed to show up for work that day, further confirming that something was terribly wrong.
Investigation:
The Dubuque Police Department launched an extensive investigation into Crystal’s disappearance. Within the first two months alone, investigators followed up on nearly 400 leads across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
All patrons who were present at Knicker’s Saloon that night were identified and interviewed. Several individuals were administered polygraph examinations. Despite the exhaustive investigation, no physical evidence or body has ever been recovered. Authorities ruled out Crystal’s boyfriend as a suspect in October 2001, three months after she went missing.
Community Response:
Crystal’s case has remained in the public consciousness for over two decades through the tireless efforts of her family and community advocates. Billboards featuring Crystal’s photograph and information have been erected around Dubuque, including a prominent one along Dodge Street where her mother passes on her daily commute to work.
In 2024, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird launched a dedicated cold case unit with three full-time investigators and a prosecutor to work alongside local law enforcement on unsolved cases like Crystal’s. The family’s efforts have also included a $2,500 reward for information leading to Crystal’s whereabouts. Nicole Torbol, who Crystal babysat as a child, had Crystal’s image permanently tattooed on her arm as a tribute to her childhood caregiver.
Family Statements:
Crystal’s mother, Barb Beam, has carried the weight of her daughter’s disappearance for over 23 years. “You’ve got to go on,” Beam said in an interview marking the 20th anniversary of Crystal’s disappearance. “You have to go on. I didn’t think it would, but you’ve got to just go on.”
Crystal’s sister Jennifer Herrig has become a vocal advocate for her sister’s case, pleading with anyone who has information to come forward. “Think of it as your family, your loved one,” Herrig said. “How would you feel if you have had to go this long with not knowing?” Crystal’s other sister, Melissa Beam, kept a detailed scrapbook documenting every aspect of the investigation and the family’s search efforts, preserving newspaper clippings and maintaining written accounts of all developments in the case.
Physical Appearance:
Crystal was a white female with strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes. She stood 5’6″ tall and weighed approximately 115 pounds.
Crystal wore blue soft contact lenses over her brown eyes. She was last seen wearing black sandals on the night she disappeared.
Current Status:
Crystal Ann Arensdorf has been missing for over 23 years. If alive today, she would be 44 years old. Authorities believe Crystal met with foul play and suspect she was the victim of homicide, though her body has never been recovered.
Two brothers from Wisconsin—Steven and David Peacock—were questioned multiple times as persons of interest in Crystal’s disappearance. In 2015, investigators received a tip claiming David Peacock had borrowed his sister’s pickup truck the night Crystal vanished instead of using his own vehicle. The tipster also provided information about the brothers’ current locations and alleged burial site. However, neither brother has ever been charged in connection with the case.
In 2020, investigators from the Iowa Major Crime Unit conducted a search of the basement at Knicker’s Saloon, though the outcome of that search has not been publicly revealed. Robert F. Mootz, the bartender who was supposed to share a taxi with Crystal, pleaded guilty to serving alcohol to a minor in May 2002 but has never been charged in connection with her disappearance.
Crystal’s case is listed in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) under case number MP396. The Dubuque Police Department continues to actively investigate her disappearance.
