Krystal Anderson
Case Information:
Krystal Channel Anderson was 30 years old when she disappeared from Wagener, South Carolina on August 20, 2022, after being forcibly thrown into the trunk of her boyfriend’s vehicle.
Krystal had recently made the brave decision to get her own place on Seivern Road in Wagener, fleeing the abusive relationship she had endured with her older boyfriend, Tony Lee Berry. She was a devoted mother of four children and worked as a home health aide, providing compassionate care to those in need.
On that fateful evening in August 2022, Krystal had just returned home from work, still wearing her work scrubs. What happened next would forever change the lives of her four young children and devastate her family.
Case Details:
Witnesses, including Krystal’s 9-year-old son, heard screaming coming from outside the home. The child watched in horror as Tony Lee Berry, then 49 years old, engaged in a violent altercation with his mother and forcibly placed her into the trunk of his 2007 Cadillac CTS.
That traumatic moment was the last time Krystal’s children saw their mother. When Krystal’s sister, Shadira Smothers, received a concerning phone call on August 23 from the father of one of Krystal’s children saying she had failed to pick up their son, the family immediately knew something was terribly wrong—Krystal would never miss time with her children.

Investigation:
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive investigation into Krystal’s disappearance. According to the arrest warrant, Berry purchased numerous items that could be used to aid in the disposal of human remains, including a gas-powered auger tool (used to drill holes in the ground), a shovel, plastic coveralls, gloves, and boxes of trash bags.
Investigators discovered Berry had conducted disturbing Internet searches, including one for “How to Commit a Murder and Get Away with it and Leave No Evidence.” When Krystal’s sister, Shadira Smothers, visited Berry’s home in a trailer park during her own search efforts, she discovered burning candles with Krystal’s name on them and found a chair in the bathtub with rope—chilling evidence that suggested premeditation.
Community Response:
The case drew significant attention to the issue of missing and murdered women of color, particularly victims of domestic violence. Private investigator Chandra Cleveland worked closely with the family throughout the investigation, and Krystal’s case received support from the Black and Missing Foundation and Girl Vow, an organization advocating for missing and murdered women of color.
Shadira Smothers became a powerful advocate for her sister, establishing “Abused and Bruised: The Krystal Anderson Foundation” to honor Krystal’s memory and support other families affected by domestic violence. In October 2024, Shadira traveled to New York City to share her mission at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, invited by Dr. Dawn Rowe, founder of the National Task Force for Missing and Murdered Women and Girls of Color.
Family Statements:
Shadira Smothers has been vocal about the pain and anguish her family has endured. “A year ago there was so much hope, I had so much faith. Now I don’t have any faith or hope that Krystal is alive,” she said during a memorial vigil in August 2023. “That’s the hardest part.”
Shadira also shared her grief in deeply personal terms: “I texted her today, just like I texted her on her birthday. I feel like I lost part of me.” She emphasized that her family continues to live in a nightmare, caring for Krystal’s four children who have been separated and are living with different family members and their biological fathers.
Physical Appearance:
Krystal was a Black female with black hair and naturally green eyes. She stood 5’1″ tall and weighed approximately 105 pounds.
She was last seen wearing her work scrubs—the uniform she wore as a home health aide. Krystal was known as a devoted mother who was deeply committed to her children and family.
Current Status:
On May 13, 2026, human remains were discovered buried off South Carolina Highway 37 in Blackville. Authorities believe these remains belong to Krystal Channel Anderson, though DNA testing is still underway for positive identification. According to private investigator Chandra Cleveland, belongings found with the remains were “identical to Krystal’s belongings.”
The discovery came after investigators received a tip—not from an anonymous source—that led them to the burial site. The scheduled trial for Tony Lee Berry has been postponed due to this development.
Tony Lee Berry, now 53, remains in custody at the Aiken County Detention Center without bond. He is charged with kidnapping and murder. His son, Darius Berry, who was initially charged with accessory after the fact for arson, had those charges dropped.
The Aiken County Solicitor’s Office stated that while the murder case is circumstantial, they have “solid evidence” to believe Krystal Anderson was killed. The family continues to await official confirmation that the remains are Krystal’s so they can finally lay her to rest.
